The internship is offered in conjunction with a traditional South African heritage hotel. Established in 1892, the hotel and conference center is centrally situated in the heart of Kimberley, approximately 50m from the Town Hall. The hotel is one of Kimberley’s oldest and most enchanting hotels and has lived through the diamond heydays. The hotel has 50 spacious bedrooms and suites that can accommodate up to 119 guests. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioners, TV, Radio, tea & coffee facilities and en suite bathroom with either bath and/ or shower. The hotel is a three star hotel.

Internship Description:

On occasion of its recent 120th birthday, the hotel owners intend to publish a coffee table book outlining the history of the hotel, which is related to the history of Kimberley and the development of diamond mining.

The intern will assist in concept development, research, and writing of the coffee table book. He or she will be part of the information gathering process and conduct interviews, visit the local library and compile information from other sources. The book will be in English, with historic images of the hotel and the city and short texts about various related subjects.

The intern will spend in the first month in the Cape Town marketing office for preparation, planning & Internet research. After one month he/she will proceed to Kimberley (approx. 900km from Cape Town) to gather more information at the site, by visiting the local library and museums, and interview staff & community members. After about four weeks in Kimberley, the intern will return to Cape Town to compile the information gathered and produce a draft document. It is envisaged that this will take four to six weeks.
