Karoo Wildlife

Description of the project:

The project is located in the heart of the Klein Karoo near the Swartberg Mountains, about halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

This is a Game Lodge  which accommodates elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, hippopotamus  and over 200 species of bird houses. For guests of the lodge bush safaris, horseback safaris, elephant feeding, walking safaris and elephant rides are offered.

Volunteers are given the opportunity to experience animals up close the Lodge. For the duration of the stay, volunteers will be assigned to a qualified employee who will  supervise the volunteers in all facets of work in a Game Lodge.

Tasks:

Volunteers can work different  tasks to get to know the spot here, but for a short stay they can not see everything. The program is therefore designed to be flexible.

Some examples:

  • Assistance in the morning routine of elephants
  • Preparation of food
  • Preparing the animals at weddings
  • Clean the elephant and horse stables (mornings and evenings)
  • Preparing the horses for horseback safaris
  • Preparation of the safari vehicles and utensils (4 per day)
  • Data collection whereabouts of the animals
  • Birds identification of one of the three water bodies
  • Assistance with of preparations of conferences
  • Assistance with the maintenance of the safari routes
  • Assistance with fencing work

The project can be performed on any day of the week throughout the year.
 

Working hours:

A working day is eight hours in the rule. Volunteers work 5 days a week, the weekend is free for sightseeing tours and other activities.

Duration:

Minimum duration: 1 week,ideally 2-3 weeks.

Accommodation:

During their stay, volunteers will be accommodated on the grounds of the lodge. The accommodation consists of a private room with bathroom, a common room and a kitchen with a barbecue area.

Meals:
Three meals are provided daily which are prepared by the staff of the lodge. Drinks are not included.

Transport:

The project offers both outbound and inbound transportation from the airport in George. For other travel needs in South Africa, they are happy to help.

Local attractions:

There are famous ostrich breeding places in  Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves, a Wildlife Ranch, a camel farm, some wineries, as well as three famous ostrich farms in the vicinity.
